Body System Checklist - Muscular System and Skeletal System
* Major functions of muscular system and skeletal system
Skeletal System
- provides shape and form for our bodies and it supports, protects, and allows our body to move. Calcium is stored in the skeletal system.
Muscular System
- it serves 3 major functions in the body which are producing motion, providing stabilization, and generating heat.

* Describe how the structure of a skeletal muscle cell provides an advantage on its function. (shape, striations, multinucleated)
Striations are lines that help the muscle cell strech and come back together so it can be used. The shape of a muscle cell is very long and big and it is also cylindrical. It has many nuclei located on the periphery which make more protein to build good muscle. This all helps it to contract and make movement for the body
Locations and functions of skeletal muscles, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle.
Skeletal Muscle
-Move and support skeleton
-Attached to Bones

Smooth Muscle
-Contracts hollow organs
-Walls of hollow internal structures
Cardiac Muscle
-Walls of the Heart
-Pump Blood

* What are tendons and ligaments?
Tendons: a tough connective tissue band connecting a muscle to bone. Ligament: A tough connective tissue band connecting bone to bone.

* Include a skeleton and label the main bones in the body.

* What is the bone marrow? What are the functions of the bone marrow?
Bone Marrow is spongy tissue that is found on the inside of your bone. The two types are yellow and red. The main job of red bone marrow is to produce red and white blood cells. Yellow bone marrow stores lipids.

* What is osteoarthritis? What are some causes of osteoarthritis? How is it treated?
Osteoarthritis is a joint disease that mostly affects the cartilage . It's a form of Arthritis caused by inflammation and loss of cartilage in the joints. The best way to treat osteoarthritis is to excersise, control your weight, and take medications to control the pain. Cartilage is tough flexible material lining the joints so bone doesnt rub on bone. If the bones do rub against eachother they will cause heat which results in injury.

*Four fun or interesting facts about the muscular and skeletal systems.

  • Adult human bodies consist of about 206 bones.
  • Bones are 6x stronger than steel if they are the same weight.
  • There are between 656-850 muscles in the human body.
  • It takes 17 muscles to smile.

*Explain how these systems might be involved, or not involved in the driver’s injury. Cite specific evidence.
This system is not part of any of his symptoms. However, since muscle is throughout the entire body, some of it had to be pierced. We think that the upper abdominal, maybe the pectoralis major, was pierced. We think this because the symptons show that a lot of organs were damaged. The pole had to go in high enough in the body to pierce the appropriate organs. The pole also probably went down on a diagonal. The pole damaged the spine, so the latissimus dorsi was probably where the pole came out. The skeletal system was not part of the injuries in any way.
